A luckless Stirling Lions remain at the foot of the Premier League table after being systematically broken down by an Athena team who desperately wanted the three points. The game started with a bang – the Lions in raptures after to 2 minutes when Evans followed up a second rebound to hit home from 10m past Vujacic. As Floreat started to gain some control, Vatistas hit the underside of the crossbar with a header from a corner, Migas rapped the upright with a powerful drive from an angle and then the same player hit the post/crossbar junction with a free kick which gave the keeper no chance
Floreat finally got it right on 24 minutes when some poor marking from the Lions on a Barrera free kick allowed Mikulic to ghost in behind the defense, chest down and slide home an equalizer almost unattended.
Strangely and probably against the run of play, Stirling found themselves in front again 14 minutes later when a Kennedy speculative shot from 22m beat Vujacic again and hit the top corner of the net. There was a further dent put in the home team when a Mirco was allowed to break free on a counter attack down the right hand side and cross to the danger area where a flurry of errors finally saw Kennedey drive low into the bottom corner for a two goal lead that carried to half time.
Roki's half-time address had the desired effect on Floreat who emerged from the break with steely determination. A minute after the resumption Simon Elton-Bott chanced his luck from distance, the defender's shot deflecting into the path of Mikulic and the big attacker slid the ball through the goalmouth to set up the path home for Floreat. On 51minutes when Scott equaled the scores from the penalty spot after Pugliese put hand on the ball in the penalty box.
Stirling had succumbed to injury and had used all their subs, and were left to play the final 26 minutes with only ten men. Floreat went for the jugular by forcing four consecutive corners, the last of which saw Apelgren rise high to head in with only eleven minutes remaining. In the end Floreat were unlucky not to score a couple more but Pacella moved well to keep put James Sammut's low strike as well as a stoppage time free-kick from Migas.
The Athena ressies also jumped to fourth spot on the ladder with a comfortable 3-1 win against their opposition. This Sunday Floreat Athena take on Spearwood Dalmatinac at Dalmatinac Park at 3pm in the Cup.
