Athena continued on their winning ways with an emphatic win over ECU Joondalup on Sunday at Litis Stadium. ECU showed a lot of promise early on and their youngish squad could have secured the lead early on with a couple of chances that flew just wide of the goal. Ryan Williams and Josh Risdon showed some great touch and senior players McMurray, Collins and Blackmore balanced up the act nicely. Floreat could also quite easily have secured the lead with Barrera heading wide after 8 minutes and 3 minutes later, Brad Scott driving straight into the keeper after a terrible turnover by the keeper under pressure. Vas Vujacic was called into action and used his feet to prevent Bushby scoring in a rare one versus one situation somehow created down the centre of the park. At the other end the ECU keeper Jones pulled off a miraculous save to deny Mikulic a headed goal after some great work from Neiderberger down the left. Scott had the ball in the net on 20 minutes but was given offside in a tight call which looked like a great ball from Vatistas. Barrera went on the rampage down the left on 31 minutes, nutmegging his opponent before sliding a cross across the face of goal with no touch by an attacking player.
At half time it was 0-0, but Floreat had probably had the better of the game already. In the second half a clever lob by Magdic saw another incredible save from Jones, clawing the ball out of the top corner acrobatically. The lesson for ECU was learned late in the match - "the fat lady doesn't sing until after 90 minutes". The home side had been on top but intro Callum Roberts to have a decisive impact on the final result. Another Barrera cut back avoided all and left Roberts to drive home unmarked from 10m. Minutes later the diminutive striker got off the ground well to head home from a Magdic loft across the box to the far post. The final nail in the coffin came as Magdic unselfishly cut back for Barrera to tap into an open goal.
Barreras contribution increased as the match went on, and he was definitely one of the best on the day. Migas was almost impeccable at left back whilst Floreats other captain Ante Kovacevic was also outstanding. This week Floreat take on Inglewood at Clipsal Stadium to attempt to make it five wins from six starts.
