The Floreat Athena club has been the home of several quality players who have gone on to become players of national and even international status.
Stan Lazaridis "Stan the Man" spent several years at the club in the early nineties.
Perth-born in 1972, is arguably Western Australia's greatest football export. His reputation began as a young left-footed teenager with Olympic Kingsway where, despite his age, he would intimidate many a defender with his extraordinary change of pace.
His representative games began with Under-17 World Youth Championship qualifiers in 1989. He made his State debut against Moscow Torpedo in 1990 and came to prominence against German club Werder Bremen (1992) before moving to West Adelaide in the national league the same year.
He made 73 appearances with the South Australian side ahead of accepting a trial with English club West Ham United in 1995. Lazaridis signed with the Hammers for season 1995/1996, making 69 appearances and scoring three goals, before moving to First Division club Birmingham City in 1999/2000 where he became an instant crowd favourite.
His Socceroo debut arrived in 1993 since when he's played 63 times for Australia, making him the most capped WA player. He twice captained WA, in all playing ten times and scoring three goals while wearing the gold and black. He was selected as a member of the Australian team which played in the 2006 World Cup.
Bobby Despotovski "The Serb", started with Floreat in 1993 and has represented Perth Glory for eight years.
Perth-born in 1971, but his parents took him to Belgrade as a baby and he didn't return for twenty years.
He started his senior career with Floreat Athena and was top marksman in the 1994 Night Series with seven goals in five games. Despotovski was also a goalscoring hero for the State team in famous victories over West Ham United and Nottingham Forest in 1995. In all, he got eight goals in eight State team outings, including a hat-trick against Burma in 1994.
He joined national league club Heidelberg and scored nine goals in his debut season, going on to snare 26 goals the following year when the club played in the Victorian State League.
He teamed up with Glory in 1996, going on to play a record 212 games for the club, winning two National Soccer League grand finals and scoring a club record 102 goals. He is one of only three players in NSL history to score 100 goals for one club. He has also played four times for Australia, scoring five goals. In 2005 he was named A-League Player of the Year.
Troy Bernard "Bernie", was one of the finest young talents seen at the club over its long history. Troy's silky skills and uncanny judgement always stood him out from the average player. Generally playing as a sweeper, Troy was incredibly consistent and reliable, always arriving to save the day when the opposition looked to have created an opportunity.
In addition he was always eager to join in the attack and although his major role was always as a defender, his technique and goal finishing skills were far superior to many strikers.
His on field leadership and outstanding ability was matched with a tireless work ethic which made him almost an 'automatic choice' for the coach every weekend.
In the Floreat club and the soccer community as a whole, Troy was regarded as one of the most respected and likeable persons in the local game and it was with great disbelief and heartache that most people reacted to the news that Troys life had been tragically cut short in a work accident in late 2004.
Out of respect for this outstanding player and gentleman both on and off the field, the Floreat Athena Club has indefinitely retired his No.7 jersey.
Troy was an integral part of the Athena first team for over eight years and played a key role in their treble winning season of 1997 which saw them claim the Night Series, Premier League championship and Boral Cup. His trademark runs though midfield resulted in his call-up to the senior State side the following year with appearances against National Soccer League outfits Perth Glory, whom he'd already spent a lengthy period on trial, and Parramatta Power.
His reputation was further enhanced by a sparkling performance in the 1999 Boral Cup Final for which he was named Man of the Match despite Athena's narrow loss to Inglewood United. He was the youngest ever captain of a Western Australian state side at age twenty two. In October 2004 he was posthumously voted Floreats Fairest and Best player of the season, an award which he has won.
The memories of this wonderful player will no doubt live on in the hearts of everyone in the Floreat Athena Club.
Dubbed the "Adopted Greek" during his 9 years on and off with Floreat Athena Ithier was renowned for spectacular long range goals (including one from the halfway line in the 2001 Night Series Final, specialty freekicks, and bone crunching tackles.
He won Floreat Athena Fairest and Best player in 1996, and figured heavily in Athena's team of 1997's, regarded as one of Athena's best years, winning the Premier League, Cup and Night Series trophies under coach and former Greek legend Jim Pyrgolis.
